                                   Brief History of KHQS

In 1981, quilt lovers, quiltmakers and quilt collectors joined together to form the Kentucky Heritage
Quilt Society, the first statewide organization to be concerned with all aspects of quiltmaking
throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

KHQS now has more than 400 members. KHQS also has two affiliate guilds. The Kentucky
Heritage Appliqué Society (KHAS) is devoted to promoting the techniques, appreciation and
preservation of hand and machine appliqué. The Quilt Artists of Kentucky (QAK) is devoted to
promoting innovative quilt making techniques and the quilt as an art form.

Activities include the annual meeting called Getaway; Quilting Adventures, an extended workshop
with a nationally know teacher; Spring Retreats and Fall Retreats; and a couple of antique Quilt
Registries a year.

Purpose:

1)

To promote understanding, appreciation, and knowledge of the art and craft of quiltmaking.

2)

To support and expand the collection and preservation of Kentucky quilts and the records of
Kentucky quiltmakers and their work.

3)

To undertake such activities as shows, contests, and educational workshops.
